Alternatives to the Overture Keyword Selector Tool

EDIT: The Overture Keyword Tool is back online…

However, the data is still from January 2007, which is very outdated.
So, whether this keyword tool will remain to be around for some time, the links below still provide alternatives to the Overture Keyword Tool that are more stable, faster, and have more accurate and up to date information.

Below is the shortlist. The tools that we find most useful, available free, that are very similar to the Overture/Yahoo Keyword Selector Tool. This list is in no specific order. Some tools may be more useful in some situations than the rest, so we leave it up to you to decide which ones you like the best.

Submit Express Keyword Suggestion Tool

This tool allows you to enter multiple keywords at once (up to 15), and get a small result set returned of related keywords and their estimated daily searches. This uses both the WordTracker and KeywordDiscovery Databases.

Word Tracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool

This tool is probably the most similar to the http://inventory.overture.com tool. It only accepts one keyword at a time, but shows you a greater result set then available with the above Submit Express Tool. Again, this returns daily searches, not monthly.

Word Tracker also offers a pay-for membership to their tool which offers greater functionality.

Google’s Related Keyword Tool

Google’s tool not only gives you related search words, but also allows you to find search words it thinks is relevant to your web site. In addition, you can also see the Search Volume vs. Advertiser Competition, Cost and Ad Position Estimates, Search Volume Trends, and Possible Negative Keywords.

However, even with all these features… there is still a downside. Google doesn’t provide an actual number for search volume. Instead, it only shows it in a very basic rating scale displayed as a horizontal line. The bigger the line, the more searches.

QUICK TIP: Use the keyword tools together

  1. Start with a few seed keywords. These should be the high level keywords that will be included in a number of related keywords or phrases.
  2. Use the Word Tracker keyword suggestion tool to find all related keywords and the estimated daily searches. This will be one list and can be used to compare to what you find using the other tools.
  3. Take the list of related keywords and drop them into the Google Related Keyword Suggestion Tool. This will allow you to greatly increase the length of related keywords.
  4. Use the Google tool to find estimated costs per click (can be used as a measurement for relative competition). Special Tip: if you order this list by Cost per Click, you can easily spot the keywords that will have high click-thru estimates and lower cost/competition.
  5. Comparing the Google keyword list with the Word Tracker results will allow you to pick out the 10-20 most valuable keywords that you will want to use in your content and search engine optimization efforts.
