When you think of search engines like toddlers, the concepts for search engine optimization (SEO) get much more simple.
With young children, you need to make things extra easy in order for them to understand. Take children’s books for example. They usually consist of a few words per page and cut right to he point.
The same thing applies to search engines. You need to make it crystal clear what each page is about, and when they understand what each page is about, they know how to rank you. The more clear, the better chance of top rankings.
Introducing: Keyword Focus.
By using a keyword focus on each page you can tell the search engines exactly what a specific page is about. However, there is a catch: You can only have one to two keyword phrases included in your keyword focus per page.
You create a keyword focus by using the word or phrase you want as the focus many times throughout the text. Take a look at an article we wrote about Google Analytics Tutorials.

In this article we consistently use the phrase “google analytics tutorials” both in the text, the web address and the headers, and the links. However, we do not jeopardize the readability of the copy or the quality of the content. This is where a little practice, the understanding of what your keyword focus should be and a touch of creative writing comes in handy.
If you do a search in Google for google analytics tutorials, you’ll see this article site comes up at #7. At the time of initial indexing, this blog contained only that one post regarding google analytics tutorials. The key is the focus.
How do I determine a page’s keyword focus?
The people over at www.webconfs.com put together a nifty tool called the Keyword Density Checker. With this one tool, you can build a focus within each page that allows the search engines to completely understand what each page is about.
The tool provides two main results: The Keyword Density Cloud and the Keyword Density Report.
Example Keyword Density Cloud

The keyword density cloud is a great visual guide that shows what the search engines will see. In the above cloud, it’s very easy to see what this page should be about… google analytics tutorials and social media marketing. Outside of that most of the words don’t really have much importance — and that’s exactly what the search engines will think as well.
Both the size of the word and the order for the words are important. You want your keyword focus to be the first words and the biggest words.
Example Keyword Density Report

The keyword density report is the second part of the equation. Again, the order of the words and the density percentage are the most important.
In this report, you will want your keyword focus to be the first words, in the right order, and a density percentage of 3% to 7%.
Putting it all together.
- Determine the one or two phrases for your keyword focus (per page)
- Write quality content that includes the keyword focus
- Tweak the content using the Keyword Density Checking tool (above)
